Daughter Is Stunned By Letters From Mother Discovered 23 Years After She Died

Amanda Lemmond's mother, Barbara Jane Hyatt, knew she didn't have much time left. The mother died 23 years ago of bone cancer. Lemmond was just a girl.

The only thing the grieving daughter had to hold on to was a stuffed animal bunny her mother gave her. Lemmond was placed in foster care.

“After my mom passed away, I was shipped around all over the country,” Lemmond said. “From Washington State to Texas, to Louisiana, to Texas, back to Washington, back to Texas — in and out of state care, foster care.”

Then one day Lemmond received a package in the mail. It was from the executor of her mother's estate. She discovered a trove of letters to Lemmond, plus photos, mementoes, and paperwork.

“Dear Amanda, you know I really miss you and not being able to get up with you every day,” Lemmond said, reading the letter. “Well honey, try to keep smiling and be brave.”

The mother gave her daughter life lessons on health, happiness, and even boys. Nearly two and a half decades later, Lemmond never thought she'd be able to hear new words from her mother again.

“These are glimpses into my past that I’ve sorely longed for, for over two decades now,” Lemmond said. “They showed up in the mail and kind of made my day.”
