There is nothing conventional about the Smith family, but that doesn't mean there is a lack of love. Tracy and Sherrie Smith are sisters. They've grown up together, are best friends, and live together.
Sherrie has seizure-causing health issues, but Tracy is always by her side to help. WFAA's Kevin Reece reports the Fort Worth, TX, sisters decided to do something shocking together: start a family.
The sisters decided to adopt six siblings: Aaron, Bayla, twins Emma and Olivia, Franco, and Jake. The children are well aware that they have two mommies.
"Mommy, have two mommy,” Franco said.
“Yes. You do have two mommies,” Tracy answered.
Sherrie and Tracy have three adopted siblings of their own. Tracy always wanted to be a mom, Sherrie was never quite so sure. Together they began fostering four of the siblings, but after they discovered Franco and Jake were out there, they brought them into the fold.
Texas has about 14,000 children in foster care. With so many kids in need, Tarrant County agreed to let the Smith sisters adopt the siblings together officially. The children's biological mother is a drug addict, and their father is in prison.
"God chose these kids for us,” said Tracy. "There are a lot of kids out there that just need people that will love them.”
While the setup might be unusual to some, Tracy and Sherrie kept these six siblings together and provided them with a loving home — who can argue with that?
