Phoebe Brown has a very unique habit compared to most other second-graders. For some reason, Phoebe always seems to find old lottery tickets.
She rarely wins, but recently she hit it big when she was out shopping with her mom.
After they finished their grocery shopping, the mother–daughter duo was walking back to their car when Phoebe noticed something on the ground. Her mom told her to leave it alone, but when she picked it up, her mom couldn’t believe her eyes.
"I stepped over a lottery ticket. She sees it and grabs it up and says, 'Mom, Mom it's a winner.' And I'm like, 'No it's not,’” Audrey says.
But when they looked at the back, the ticket was worth $100.
Phoebe didn’t want to keep the winnings for herself, though. She wanted to help others. And it just so happened that that day, a flier from her school came home seeking donations for a can drive.
"That day a flier came in from the school to help with… canned goods and nonperishable items and she said, 'Mom, Mom, can we do that?' And I was like, 'Yeah,’” Audrey says.
Phoebe’s parents were so proud of her for selflessly giving away her winnings that her dad decided to match whatever amount of money she donated. So with $200 worth of groceries in her pocket, Phoebe and her family went to Walmart to buy as many canned goods as they could for Phoebe’s school.
"You wonder, if our kids these days, if that's how they're thinking,” says Joshua, Phoebe’s dad. “This just goes to show you they are thinking that. And that's a real good thing.”
