After his years as the "tough" judge on American Idol, Simon Cowell has built up a rough exterior.
He's known for saying harsh things to performers looking to break into the industry. But he also knows when to build people up as well.
On the finale of The X Factor UK, former winner Louis Tomlinson of the band One Direction returned to perform.
But just three days before his scheduled performance, Louis' mother, Johannah Deakin, tragically passed away from leukemia. She was only 43 when she passed away from her tough battle with the disease.
Despite the heartbreak, Louis still appeared on the show to perform for his fans. He had to hold back tears after he finished.
After Louis performed his song "Just Hold On" with Steve Aoki, which was dedicated to his mom, Simon had something very important to say.
Louis' mother was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukemia earlier this year. She passed away early on December 7, surrounded by her seven children and other loved ones.
Louis rose to fame as a member of One Direction, with Simon Cowell working hard to help their success and mentor them over the years.
He returned to the show that made him famous as a judge and a guest a few times, but this time was the hardest. He took to social media, for the first time since his mother's death, to convey his feelings.
The support helped him get through the night and deliver a very energetic and heartfelt performance.
Simon is a huge part of Louis' success, which makes his kind words incredibly powerful.
"Louis, I have to say I've known you for six years. The bravery of what you've done," Simon says. "I respect you as an artist, as a person. And your mum was so proud of you and she was so excited for the performance. She's looking down on you tonight."
