J.H. Cavazos was grieving the passing of his father, J.H. "Johnny" Cavazos Sr., who passed away earlier in 2016, when something incredible happened.
One night, the younger Cavazos couldn't sleep — he was thinking about his father and missing his presence. One of the things that always made him feel connected to his father was driving his truck. He wrote on Facebook, "It smells like him, it feels like him and all of his old tools and some of his personal items are still kept there just like he left them."
In addition, Cavazos keeps a photograph of his father attached to the driver's side visor. Cavazos decided to drive around and check on his family's vacant lots and properties. As he was driving by one of the lots, he noticed that someone had dumped trash there.
As he was picking up the garbage, he saw a man walking toward him. He was surprised to see someone else out, as it was after midnight and the weather was pretty horrible.
The man came closer and asked if he could help pick up the trash. Cavazos told him there wasn't much left to do, but said he could help out if he wanted to. As they picked up trash together, Cavazos asked the man about his life and learned that he was a homeless man who often slept outside a church. He told Cavazos that his name was Oscar, and he offered Cavazos a cookie from his pocket.
A few minutes later, they finished cleaning up the trash and Oscar began to walk away. Cavazos got in his car, then decided to ask Oscar if he'd like something to eat. Oscar graciously accepted his food offer and got into the truck with Cavazos. After they picked up food, they sat in Cavazos' father's car and spoke about life.
As they continued to talk, the subject of parents came up. Oscar mentioned that Cavazos must have some great parents to be such a nice man, and Cavazos handed him the photo of his father from the visor.
Oscar stared at the photo, moving it back and forth to get a better view. Cavazos offered Oscar his glasses so he could see the image more clearly. As soon as he put them on, Oscar started to cry. He looked at Cavazos and said, "I know your parents."
He went on to explain that years earlier, his baby girl was dying and he wasn't able to get the medication she needed in Mexico, where they lived. He came to the U.S. and went to the first pharmacy he found, which happened to be owned by Cavazos' parents. They provided Oscar with the medication she needed.
Although his daughter later passed away, Oscar always meant to repay the Cavazos family. Cavazos told him that what he had done — helping clean up the garbage — was all the repayment they needed.
