Looking back at the footage, an encounter between Steven Poletti and a wild animal could have turned out very differently. The security camera caught the chilling moment when the creature followed the doctor into his office — and when it chased him back out.
The orthopedic surgeon was not aware that there was a dog-like animal right behind him when he walked into the building but felt it brush against his leg once inside.
He quickly turned around and realized that this was no dog: the black-tipped tail of the animal indicated that it was a coyote.
The animal bared his teeth, and the doctor saw no reason to stay put. His instincts took over, and he ran right back out, the coyote on his heels.
Luckily, the animal got distracted by a squirrel and ran away in a different direction.
The curious encounter is certainly making some people scratch their heads. There are many coyotes living on Sullivan Island in South Carolina, but the animals have rarely ventured so far from their territory — in this case, three miles away. Police haven't yet encountered this kind of situation, where one of the animals followed a human inside an enclosed space. They are investigating the situation, but surely all residents of the area already have their eyes peeled!
