Bill Murray: 10 Facts About Everyone’s Favorite Lovable Comedian

Bill Murray isn't your average star, no sir.

He is a true master of making you lose your breath laughing while he remains entirely deadpan and frank. His comedy is so sincere and true to life that there's no way you can't relate to it. Sure, sometimes it's a little sad, but that's what comedy is all about: making people laugh at life's most unfortunate situations. Bill is one of the best of the best at that, don't you think?

Bill has appeared in some of our favorite movies, like Caddyshack, Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Lost In Translation, just to name a few. Everyone has a favorite Bill Murray movie — what's yours?

1. He Fired His Agents In Favor Of An 800 Number

In 2000, Bill was so tired of dealing with his agents that he fired them and set up an automated 800 number instead. As reported by the National Post, he rarely ever got to the messages. As a result, he's missed out on many a movie role. As of two years ago, he still hadn't hired any agents back!

2. All Of His Lines In Caddyshack Were Improvised

Murray's part as the groundskeeper was just supposed to be a small bit part, but once filmmakers saw how hilarious he was, they decided to keep him on set for a little longer. He filmed for a total of six days, and every single one of his lines was totally improvised. With nothing but his wit, he made comedy history.

3. He Really Did Make Those Three Strikes In Kingpin

At the end of the movie, when his character bowled the three strikes in a row, that really was Bill scoring those points! The crowd and his own reactions were totally genuine.

4. He Has Eight Siblings

Bill grew up in a very nice suburb of Chicago named Wilmette with eight siblings, three of whom are also actors: Brian Doyle-Murray, Joel Murray (pictured above), and John Murray. Nancy, Edward, Laura, Peggy, and Andy make up the rest of the rather large group of siblings.

5. He Is Worth $140 Million

According to Alpha LifeBill is worth $140 million as of this year. Although, it really doesn't seem like he's been in it for the money at any point in his career!

6. He Has Homes In Four Places

Bill has residences in Los Angeles; Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts; Charleston, South Carolina; and Palisades, New York. He mainly resides in his home in Charleston.

7. Hunter S. Thompson Almost Drowned Him

While shooting Where the Buffalo Roam, a movie about Hunter's rise to fame, Bill and Hunter were constantly attempting to one-up each other. At one point, they were trying to prove who could be most like Houdini, so Hunter tied Bill to a chair and tossed him into a pool. He nearly drowned before Hunter could pull him out.

Bill Murray is awesome in many ways, but apparently he's no Houdini!

8. He's Been Known To Crash Parties

Bill has been known to crash a party every now and again, including one back in 2006 in St. Andrews, Scotland. The then-56-year-old ended up tagging along with a 22-year-old student to a house party, during which he reportedly drank liquor from a coffee cup and proceeded to wash the dishes.

9. He Once Had A Spat With Chevy Chase

After Chevy left Saturday Night Live, he returned soon after for a guest spot. Things reportedly got heated when Bill approached him, apparently upset and hurt that he left the cast. They exchanged very charged insults at each other. However, Bill later admitted that he was, in fact, just hurt and took it out on Chevy as anger. They returned to being friends and starred in Caddyshack together.

10. He Is The Father Of Six Sons

With his first wife, Margaret Kelly, he had sons Homer, born in 1982, and Luke, born in 1985. With his second wife, Jennifer Butler, he had Caleb in 1993, Jackson in 1995, Cooper in 1997, and Lincoln in 2001. He recently helped promote his first-born's Brooklyn bar by showing up and bartending, creating a line that wrapped around blocks.
