As we grow up, we realize what is truly important to us and where we're meant to be. For a 23-year-old man named Shaygam Newton, learning where he belonged involved a lot of struggle, but he was rewarded with a ton of happiness.
In the video below, posted on March 23, 2017, Shaygam explains, "Animals mean a lot to me. They're like me family because when I grew up, I didn't have any."
He adds, "Whenever I met animals from a young age, I cared for them. I was thrown out of my house because of animals." According to the video, Shaygam started taking in stray dogs at the age of 10, and now he lives with 21 rescues. He still continues to feed strays and keep them healthy, despite not having much to call his own.
To solve that problem, he collects donations from members of his community. Shaygam is not only selfless to his 21 dogs, but he is also a role model to the young boys in town.
He says, "There are a lot of young guys who come to me on weekends, and we take the dogs for long walks. You see I keep them off the streets. In our community, there's a lot of gangsterism. So, I keep them out of trouble."
The teens and boys who would otherwise be in horrible situations are now thriving in the company of Shaygam's 21 dogs and other strays.
