Joe Davis is an 11-year veteran of the United States Army with three deployments to the Middle East under his belt. Unfortunately, he suffered many injuries, and with those injuries came Parkinson's disease, which forced him to end his military career. This past Wednesday, March 29, Joe was asked by the members of the Mount Calvary Lutheran Church to present another veteran with an award.
Or so he thought.
During a lunch, Joe was asked to join the pastor for the announcement.
"I promised Joe here that all that he would need to do is stand here and not speak," the pastor said.
That promise was actually a bit of a lie, since there wasn't another soldier or veteran there to receive an award.
"Joe, the one we are recognizing today is you, for your service in the U.S. Army," the pastor said.
The audience in attendance at the church applauded, but the surprises weren't done yet.
Members of Operation Finally Home, an organization that provides free homes to wounded and ill veterans, appeared with a large portrait in their hands for Joe and his family.
It was a picture of a beautiful house.
"We are going to build you a brand-new custom home," said David Belman, of Belman Homes, who's in partnership with Operation Finally Home.
Tears and hugs were shared by Joe, his family, and the generous people there.
"It's hard to find the words but it's amazing," Joe said.
