Zookeeper Scans Pregnant Dingo’s Belly, Then Checks The Image To Count The Puppies

It's not just human moms who get ultrasounds a few weeks into their pregnancies, but animal moms too!

Zookeepers often perform these ultrasounds on squirmy animals, but sometimes they cooperate with their handlers. We got to take a look at how one zoo handled a gorilla's historic pregnancy, and how it managed to get the animal to cooperate with her daily checkups, using tricks and treats to get her to move the way they needed her to.

But as one zookeeper found out, it's not that easy to get a dingo to cooperate during an ultrasound!

Featherdale Wildlife Park keeper Chad Staples live-streamed an ultrasound of Smudge the dingo. While other keepers tried to hold her still, Chad reached under her to scan her belly.

Then, checking the screen, he counted the number of puppies in her litter: four!

But that wasn't the only treat. He, his colleagues, and all the viewers got a first look at the dingo puppies squirming and wriggling around in their mom's belly. It took a few attempts to get a really good look at the picture.

What an awesome inside look at what keepers do to help monitor the pregnancies of the animals under their care. Have you ever seen anything like it?
