Fire Chief Pulls Into Parking Lot, Then Sees Pregnant Woman In Labor In Back Seat Of SUV

Thomas Township Fire Chief Mike Cousins is used to the dangers and risks of firefighting, but on Wednesday, April 5, he found himself facing down a different kind of danger.

A woman giving birth in a parking lot!

The Michigan fire chief received a frantic call and was the first to arrive.

"We arrived on the scene and got in the back of the Suburban and everything and certainly realized we were definitely going to be having a baby right there, that there wasn't going to be time to get to the hospital," Cousins said.

In fact, earlier that morning, Stacy Clapp and her stepmom had been on their way to the hospital, six miles down the road from the Family Video parking lot.

Stacy was ready to give birth, but as her stepmom drove, she quickly realized she wouldn't be able to make it to the hospital.

The only thing on her mind? "Push!"

So Chief Cousins and Sergeant Al Fong of the police, who arrived after him, wound up being the heroes who came to Stacy's aid.

"As medical professionals we are trained in the delivery of a baby, but something we don't practice very often," Cousins said.

But they did it, and did it successfully!

"Seeing the baby come out and hearing the baby crying when he came out, like the chief said, it's kind of like a euphoric feeling where you're seeing life come into the world instead of the other way around," Sergeant Fong said.
