Amy Forbes and her two daughters were grabbing dinner at El Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Iowa. The visit led to some confusion over the check. Amy had paid and was out the door when suddenly, the waiter stopped her in her tracks.
"Is this your check? Can I have your check back?" the waiter told her.
Amy was confounded — she thought something might have been wrong with it. The waiter, Rafael Sanchez, took the check back and handed Amy a card. When the mother read it, she was completely stunned.
It read: "Please enjoy your meal tonight as a gift from our family. We are honoring our daughter, who we lost to brain cancer eight years ago today. Mexican was her favorite and she would be delighted to know we are paying it forward in this way."
Rafael says it was a woman who wrote the note. She noticed Amy and her children, and instructed Rafael to give her the card instead, but by the time he gave her the card, the mysterious woman was gone.
Amy never found out who paid for her meal in 2016. She'll never know the family who turned their tragedy into something positive, but she is forever grateful.
"I respect their privacy, but I definitely want them to know that we are really appreciative and that we understand the message of enjoying our time together as a family," she told KCCI.
