When my dad would take my sisters and I to get ice cream, there was always a clear divide. I would always order chocolate, my sister would get vanilla, and Dad would show off and get a twisted cone with both.
Of course, those were the only three options at the particular ice cream shop we used to go to… and most of the chocolate would end up on my face anyway. But even as we got older and ventured to different ice cream shops with more options, I would still pick chocolate.
It wasn't until I began working at an ice cream shop myself that I became more familiar with what I considered to be weird ice cream flavors like s'mores, dark chocolate raspberry swirl, or moose tracks.
However, the list below proves how mistaken I was about what actually constitutes a weird ice cream flavor. Spoiler alert: cookies and cream does not count.
What do you think of these totally out-there options? Does your local shop have an even weirder ice cream flavor?

1. Sweet Potato Ice Cream
Sweet potatoes are usually baked or made into "healthy" fries. However, at Sweet Republic, an Arizona artisanal ice cream chain, sweet potatoes are put into ice cream with toasted marshmallows.
2. Habanero Bacon Avocado Ice Cream
Also out of Sweet Republic is this savory-sounding variety that can be seen here churning with bacon chunks.
3. Goat Cheese Beet Swirl
I love some crumbled goat cheese on a salad, but in ice cream? It must be good if Denver-based Sweet Action Ice Cream keeps making it!
4. Lobster Ice Cream
This lobster ice cream made on site at Ben and Bill's Chocolate Emporium in Maine includes real chunks of local lobster. The ice cream is, of course, butter flavored.
5. Ube Purple Yam Ice Cream
Ube ice cream made out of local purple yams is the specialty of Dave's Hawaiian Ice Cream. Vanilla is combined with the yam to create the rich purple color.
6. Olive Oil Ice Cream
The Bent Spoon in Princeton, New Jersey, has an olive oil flavor on their menu. The top scoop in the photo is the specialty, with a slight oil drizzle.
7. Horseradish Ice Cream
Horseradish ice cream doesn't sound very appealing, unless perhaps it's served with a nice medium-rare steak. However, that doesn't stop certain ice cream parlors around America from serving the flavor.
8. Kimchi Ice Cream
Kimchi is a Korean superfood made from fermented vegetables and chilies. The folks at Smitten Ice Cream decided to churn some into their frozen treats, and something tells me it's worth the risk.
9. Sriracha Ice Cream
Any fans of sriracha sauce know that it's good on everything. In this case, that includes ice cream.
10. Summer-Corn Ice Cream
Summer corn and ice cream are both staples of the warm season, so why not combine the two? Humphry Slocombe thought it sounded like a good idea, too!
11. Garlic Caramel Swirl
The folks at The Hop Ice Cream decided to add everyone's favorite bread topping into their ice cream. Caramel makes everything taste great, so this is definitely worth a try.
12. Wasabi Ice Cream
You may have heard of or had green tea ice cream after a Japanese meal. This might look similar, but this wasabi ice cream will definitely pack a little bit more of a punch. I'm not complaining!
