After completing the daunting task of picking a college, choosing a major is probably one of the most important decisions a young person will make in their life.
According to USA Today, some of the most popular majors around the country are history, english, accounting, criminal justice, biology, psychology and business administration and management. This is not surprising considering that they are also some of the most general and give students a myriad of career options.
While the above majors remain popular, there are a number of other majors available that allow students to take the road less traveled.
Colleges may used to have had a lot of rules, but these days, it seems like almost anything can go — even in the classroom.

Bagpipes have been a tradition at Carnegie Mellon University for over 75 years, and as such, they offer a Bagpipe performance major.
2. Citrus
Florida Southern University offers the nation's only citrus program that provides students with expertise about growing citrus fruit and the industry.
3. Canadian Studies
At Duke University, you can earn a degree in Canadian studies. The program is more about the culture, literature and politics than it is maple syrup or hockey, although I imagine they do come up.
4. Farrier Science
Become a horseshoeing expert at Mesalands Community College in New Mexico, where they offer a degree in farrier science. It's about more than just shoeing a horse, teaching also how to run your own business.
5. Fermentation Studies
Students can be prepared for the competitive fields of wine and brewing science at Appalachian State University.

Mississippi State University offers an degree in floral management where students learn all of the ins and outs of the floricultural business. This includes, sourcing, purchasing, distributing, marketing and designing. Who knew flowers were so complicated?
7. Mortuary Science
Lincoln College of New England offers a degree in Mortuary science to prep students for a career in the funeral services field. It may sound morbid, but it's also recession proof.
8. Puppet Arts
Puppet arts is a program offered by the University of Connecticut. The first puppet class was taught in 1964 and since, the major has been instituted as part of the dramatic arts.

Students at Vincennes University can learn all about the bowling industry and how to manage a facility with the bowling management major.
13. Adventure Education
Adventure junkies can get their fix and a college degree at Plymouth State University where the Adventure Education program offers classes in paddling, rock climbing, and mountaineering.
14. Nannying
Become a nanny of the highest degree at Sullivan University. The degree is technically called Early Childhood Education Professional Nanny Program and addresses the growing childcare concerns had by many families.
15. The Beatles
Liverpool is the home of The Beatles, and consequently, Liverpool Hope University offers a Masters degree in The Beatles, Popular Music & Society.
16. Packaging
At Michigan State University, they take packaging very seriously. The School of Packaging focuses on the science of packaging and helps to research environmentally friendly alternatives.
