Amanda Seyfried Says She Needed A Bodyguard After Sharing Her Feelings About Charlie Kirk

Amanda Seyfried still seems shocked by people’s reactions to the comment she made about Charlie Kirk. Shortly after Charlie was killed in September 2025, the Mamma Mia! actress reacted to a compilation post that featured some of the offensive things Charlie had said before. The post urged viewers to “get to know the man you’re eulogizing…in his own words!”

Amanda, clearly bothered by the things Charlie said in that video, shared her thoughts in the comments: “He was hateful.”

And that comment sparked a ton of outrage.

Apparently, the backlash was so intense that the 40-year-old actress considered deleting her comment after it went viral. Ultimately, she decided against it. Instead, she took to Instagram to explain herself. She also described her thought process when speaking to Who What Wear.

Even though a lot of people were mad about what she said, she didn’t think she did anything wrong.

“I’m not f—ing apologizing for that,” she told the publication. “I mean, for f—‘s sake, I commented on one thing. I said something that was based on actual reality and actual footage and actual quotes. What I said was pretty d— factual, and I’m free to have an opinion, of course.”

So, she explained herself, but did not apologize.

In an Instagram post, Amanda emphasized that nuance is a thing (even though social media can seem devoid of it at times). She explained that she can both condemn violence and also oppose sexism and racism.

“We’re forgetting the nuance of humanity,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO very much agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable. No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless and violent deaths and shootings. Can we agree on that at least?”

Now, months later, Amanda has shared more details about how that one comment impacted her.

By the sounds of it, she was concerned for her safety after the comment went viral. The controversy came up during a recent interview with GQ. Amanda was clearly still surprised by the way some of Charlie’s supporters reacted to her comment. She continues to stand by what she said, though.

“A, I’m allowed to f—ing voice my feelings, and B, do it in a way that’s not unkind necessarily,” she told the publication. “But there’s just an outsized fear and hatred and impulse to bash and to tear down. And I experienced a very small fraction of that.”

She also touched on wanting to set a certain example for her children. However, this situation seemed to make things complicated. “I want my kids to be able to feel safe to voice their opinions as long as they’re not harmful,” she explained. “So I’m like, ‘What do I do? What do I say?'”

But the situation clearly escalated, based on Amanda’s description of it: “And then all of a sudden I find myself with a f—ing bodyguard at the airport and I’m like, ‘This is crazy.'”
