One bride's wedding day did not go as good as planned, and she took to Reddit to share her story. Though her actual wedding went well, the woman said that her wedding reception took such a bad turn that she ended up ditching it. The post has garnered a lot of attention, gaining over 3,500 reactions after the bride asked if she was in the wrong for walking out on her reception after her new sister-in-law threw a tantrum over the couple preparing to leave the venue.
She started off by giving some context about herself and the situation. She is 27 years old and from the UK. Her husband is 38 and from the US, and they had a long-distance relationship for two years before getting married.
According to her, prior to the wedding she "met my in-laws over video calls, but not in person until a week before my [actual] wedding.” Her husband, on the other hand, visited her in the UK for weeks at a time and often met those in her friend circles.

“When I got to America and … finally met the family, it was hard because they claimed they wanted to get to know me so many times, but none of them actually tried to make conversation with me,” she wrote. “They didn’t ask questions, and they were all talking about things I had no idea [about], as it was sports or something I couldn’t even try to engage in, like reliving memories I couldn’t really comment on, other than [saying], ‘That sounds awesome’ or ‘That’s great.’”
She went on to share that her husband's family claimed that they wanted to get to know her, yet made no real effort. As someone with severe anxiety, she shared that every now and then she had to step “outside every now and then to get a breather from awkward social situations.” Since the family seemed “unable to get to know me — I felt ignored and invisible,” she added.
As far as her wedding reception went, people were partying and nobody talked to her, she said. "The only people who actually had conversations with me were my friends.” She and her husband spent most of the evening together, and she also was spending a lot of time with a friend of hers that ended up leaving around 8 p.m.
At that point, "no one [else] was speaking to me and my husband much at that point," she said. After another hour, the bride changed out of her wedding dress and started packing everything up so there wasn't a lot left to do after the reception was over. In that moment, her 48-year-old sister-in-law realized they were preparing to leave.
According to the woman, her husband's sister began to “scream at me, asking if we’re leaving, like she was in severe shock.” She added that groom's sister ended up throwing a "tantrum" and despite her husband trying to comfort her, the sister kept crying. After a while, the couple's ride arrived. “I shouted to my husband that I was leaving with or without him. I know [it] wasn’t my brightest moment, but I was tired, especially with my body clock not changing either.” The sister-in-law and even the husband ended up being mad at her, and the husband of the sister wouldn't give them their wedding video because of the fact that the bride made his wife upset.
Most commenters under the post didn't think the bride was in the wrong.
“This is your husband’s problem. Just ignore her,” one user stated.
“I really don’t understand why [the husband’s] sister was upset," another person commented. "You were already leaving [the venue]. You didn’t leave because of the sister. You left because the reception was over.”
