Carrie Underwood’s Back in the Spotlight But She’s No Longer ‘America’s Sweetheart’

It’s been about a year since Carrie Underwood performed at President Donald Trump’s inauguration, and people are definitely not over it. In general, the country singer, 42, has tried to remain politically neutral, but obviously, singing “America the Beautiful” for Trump does not come across as neutral. That one performance continues to impact people’s perception of her, and some former fans have decided to boycott the shows she appears on (like American Idol) and stop listening to their music (even if they really enjoyed it pre-MAGA).

In 2026, former fans shared their thoughts on the country singer they used to love — and they did not have the most positive things to say about her. One person called her “self-absorbed,” and many others suggested that the inauguration performance would affect her for years to come. At the moment, it seems to be affecting her role on American Idol.

Former fans say she is basically “off their radar” now.

In 2026, people are still calling for others to “boycott Underwood, wherever & whenever.” Many have said they’re no longer watching American Idol because she’s a judge on the show, and when she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January, numerous fans of that show made a point not to watch. On Threads, one critic wrote, “Lost all respect for @carrieunderwood for selling her soul to the devil! I stopped watching @americanidol because of her complete lack of morals!” A couple of people on the platform claimed to have met people who knew her and said that no one had nice things to say about her, even before she performed at Trump’s inauguration. Of course, the inauguration performance certainly doesn’t help.

Someone else said, “No coming back from that Carrie!!!!”

Apparently, she recently got booed on “American Idol.”

For some reason, Carrie admitted to this herself. In February, she took to X to share, “Spoiler alert…I get booed A LOT from our Hollywood Week audience @AmericanIdol,” adding an embarrassed emoji. And yeah, that does seem pretty embarrassing. Carrie did not explain why she was booed, but people had their theories. Those who reacted to the post did not feel sorry for her at all, because maybe performing at Trump’s inauguration is not the best decision to make if you want to appeal to a wider audience. They also questioned whether she was posting to get sympathy from her followers. If that’s what she was going for, it did not appear to work all that well for her. Instead, one critic wrote, “Because you are a woman and you vocally support a POS President…do you want sympathy?” Someone else added, “Good, you’re a clown and a disappointment. You shouldn’t be on TV.”

Additionally, numerous people wanted Carrie to know they would do the exact same thing if given the opportunity. “I’ve been booing you since the inauguration,” one of them said. “And it’s still not loud enough,” someone else wrote. A third person chimed in with, “they shouldve [thrown] tomatoes at you too.”

Previously, a report alleged that American Idol producers were concerned that Carrie might be too controversial for the show at this point. As an insider told Rob Shuter, “the show needs mass appeal,” and Carrie’s apparent politics are alienating lots of people who would otherwise watch the show.
