Words have power, even if we don’t know it. Words can soothe a crying child or inflict pain. This means our names also signal to the world who we are. Since pets don’t get to choose their own monikers, owners need to be aware of this. What you decide to call your dog matters.
The seven names on this list should be avoided at all costs. Some of these names should not be shouted in a crowded place. Others are simply cringey.
Christian Grey
This name comes from a character from the popular book and movie series 50 Shades Of Grey. It might seem punny because the character is into BDSM. Your dog will also probably be into leashes and biting, but you should still avoid this name. There are better options out there.
Gotham
This is another name that sounds clever but will get old fast. For those non-Batman fans, Gotham is the fictional city where the superhero lives. Batman often says that Gotham needs him. Dog owners could use the same line but it will only be funny the first couple of times.
Killer
Names can become self-fulling prophecies. You don’t want your dog to be a murderer so why would you name it that? Name your pooch something more aspirational, please. This way the only killing they will do will be their favorite squeaky toy.
Fire
This is not a name you are going to want to yell out in a crowded room. Fires are for camping and rainy days. It is not a moniker for your furry friend. There is no need to alarm the world with it.
Bomb
Your dog might be da bomb but it should not be named after the popular slang. This is another name no one needs to hear shouted out loud. It will only cause panic and mayhem.
Danger
No one wants their pup to be dangerous. Even guard and police dogs only unleash their inner baddie sometimes. The majority of their days are for belly rubs and good times. Don’t set your dog up for failure by giving them a name that encourages scary behaviors. It will also make others afraid of them and no one wants that.
Karen
Karen is a beautiful name that unfortunately now has negative associations. It has become synonymous with a middle class white woman who is overly demanding and entitled. It is another negative moniker to avoid. Pups with this name will always be asking to speak with a manager.
