At age 81, Danny DeVito remains actively involved in the entertainment industry. Over the past 20 years, he’s portrayed Frank Reynolds on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and he recently produced a new comedy thriller called Drag alongside two of his children, Lucy DeVito and Jake DeVito. On October 15, he and his kids attended the Sitges Film Festival in Spain. Some fans were shocked by the images of Danny.
In photos from his recent red carpet appearance, Danny was using a cane.
In photos shared by The U.S. Sun, Danny used a cane to get around at the event. It’s unclear whether he’s currently dealing with an injury, according to the publication. At the film festival, the 81-year-old TV star sported a patterned shirt, khaki pants, thick glasses, and black Crocs.
Meanwhile, his son, Jake, 38, wore a white shirt, black blazer, and black pants, and his daughter Lucy, 43, paired a sheer black top with a leather skirt.
Lucy is also an actress.
In addition to working as a co-producer for Drag, she also stars in the film, which is set to come out in theaters next year. Danny welcomed his three adult children—Lucy, Jake, and Grace, 41—with Rhea Perlman, whom he is not separated from but continues to have a friendly relationship with.
During various interviews, Danny has made it clear that his family is a priority to him. In 2013, he told The Guardian, “I have been very fortunate in my life. I have had a lot of happiness. I have a great family and I work a lot, and that’s what I like to do.” (Which might explain why, 13 years later, he’s still working—but doing so alongside his children).
His unconventional marriage has also gotten a lot of attention.
And it’s something people continue to talk about, even though Danny and Rhea separated years ago at this point. Given that Danny and Rhea are separated but continue to maintain a good relationship with each other, some of their fans actually didn’t realize that they were no longer together. Earlier this year, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star explained his relationship with Rhea during an interview with AARP.
They originally broke up in 2012 before later getting back together. But by 2017, they called it quits again. And yet, they remain married to each other to this day. So, why not just get divorced? They don’t seem to feel the need to do that. Both Danny and Rhea have suggested that their current arrangement works well for them.
“We’re always over at her house,” Danny told AARP. “We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff. So that’s a good relationship.” Previously, when questioned about filing for divorce, Rhea questioned why they would need to do that. “That’s not in the picture…” she said. “What for? We do live separately. We see each other a lot, too.”
They share meals sometimes, see each other pretty often, and also experience less pressure. Rhea previously explained that “all the tense stuff is gone” now that they’re separated.
“We were together for 40 years,” she explained. “Forty years is a long time! You might have to do something else! It’s OK!” Fair enough! It seems to work for them, and that’s what really matters.
