It’s pretty hard to miss Air Force One as that gigantic Boeing 747-8 which has been modified in a major way. There’s also the presidential name slapped on the side of it. So when Donald Trump had to avoid assassins with Air Force One as his primary mode of transportation, a wild decoy plan went into motion. And, OK, maybe assassins is a little dramatic, but according to AP News, officials believed Trump might be the target of a missile attack in Turkey.
So when the plan went into motion for Trump to enter Air Force One and secretly leave the plane, it became an elaborate series of events to protect the president. Never mind the fact that some of his staff members and members of the press had boarded Air Force One, ready to head to the United States. And in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), you can see part of the decoy plane plan begin.

AP News reported that, when Trump and several members of his Cabinet, traveled to Turkey in July 2026 for a NATO summit, Trump was forced to secretly disembark Air Force One to go home. It wasn’t the month after that those close to Trump, and Trump himself, opened up about the ruse that had potentially saved the president’s life.
An alleged Iranian threat was the catalyst for officials moving Trump from Air Force Once into a military plane through a catering truck. In the video posted on X, you can see the catering truck right under the plane. It is believed that Trump exited Air Force One secretly and then got into the truck and was moved to a higher security mode of transportation.
Someone joked in the comments under the X post, “Damn they don’t wanna circle the block or something first?”
Another wrote, “I’ve heard of ‘get to the Choppa!’ But ‘get to the catering container!’?”
Others questioned why the elaborate plan was acted out at all, even if there was a potential danger. For some, it seems a bit overkill.
“So did they have intel that Iran somehow smuggled multiple surface to air missiles into Turkey or something?” A user commented. “‘Cause otherwise why did they need to go full James Bond sleight of hand here?”
Another questioned, “So he left the Qatari plane, went over to regular Air Force One and then hid in a food truck to go to another plane? Lol.”
He left members of his staff on the “decoy plane.”
The idea of the move was clearly to protect the president at all costs. But, in doing so, Trump left behind key members of his team. Marco Rubio, Stephen Miller, and Karoline Leavitt were among the White House staffers left behind on Air Force One. If they were made aware of that fact before or after Trump was safely moved and leaving the country in another plane, it’s not totally clear. But they had to have been at least a little miffed at being left behind, as it were.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was with Trump in the smaller military aircraft after he exited Air Force One in the catering truck. The pair were also accompanied by Trump’s Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino, Oval Office operations director Walt Nauta, and an executive assistant, Natalie Harp.
There was a possible missile attack planned for Air Force One.
ABC News reported that the reason behind the elaborate catering truck Air Force One move was to keep Trump safe under the threat of a missile attack by Iran. A senior administration official close to Trump said, per the outlet, that Trump’s team was led to believe an Iran terrorist group knew of Trump’s location in Turkey and that there were plans to use a shoulder-fired missile to attack Trump on Air Force One.
Trump’s elaborate and, frankly, dramatic, escape plan to get to safety was all because of the alleged threat to him. The press left behind on Air Force One were reportedly not made aware of the threat at that time.
