There are a lot of child celebrities who grew up in the spotlight. From our point of view, it always seemed like they had the life we all dreamed of. But as the years have passed, celebrities who grew up in Hollywood have opened up about the trauma they unfortunately experienced, showing us that the life we always wished for was not always glamorous.
Howard Stern had Drew Barrymore on his show, The Howard Stern Show, talking to her about her years growing up in the spotlight. In the video clip, Howard starts off by saying that Drew had to raise herself because her father and mother were not there for her. With this statement, Drew shakes her head in agreement.
They begin to talk about how Drew had Paris Hilton on her show the other day, and how Paris was put in an institution as a teen and locked up and put in isolation. During Drew’s interview with Paris, Drew told Paris that she knew what that was like.
Drew says to Howard, “My mom put me in a place that was like a full psychiatric ward. I used to laugh at those, like, Malibu 30-day places. They talked about things that pissed me off. A little spa vacation for 30 days, like, in Malibu was sort of the opposite of the experience I had.”
Drew then goes on to tell Howard that she was put in Van Nuys Psychiatric. This was not the Malibu experience at all. If you acted out or messed around, you would get put in a padded room or stretcher restraints.
Howard then asks Drew what she did that was so bad that she had to go in the padded room. Drew has the best answer I have ever heard, and I honestly wouldn’t expect anything less from her! She says she would get all the girls riled up and attempt to start a riot against the institution!

Drew then explains why she thinks her mother did what she did. To Drew, her mother created a monster in Drew, and Drew was out of control and her mother didn’t know what to do at that point. Instead of sitting down with Drew and talking to her, Drew's mom felt it was best to send her away to get help.
