If there’s one thing that Drew Barrymore is known for, it’s her continual open and honest nature about what she has been through over her 48 years of life.
This video shared by the Icons+ channel on Facebook Watch takes a look inside Drew’s tumultuous relationship with her mother, Jaid Barrymore, that resulted in a toxic relationship with alcohol since the age of 9.
The video shares footage from a now infamous interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show from 1990 where Drew shared with Oprah that she “didn’t want to play Barbies, she wanted to go out to a club and dance,” even when she was a young child living in the Hollywood spotlight.
A frustrated but ever-composed Oprah can then be seen asking Jaid, “Where were you when she was going to parties and bars at 9?” Jaid replied that the mother and daughter would often go to parties together, but after some time, they would split up and go their separate ways.
In the footage, Drew explained that she would be given alcohol at parties and by friends and even though it started out as “sips,” it soon developed into an addiction.

After the interview, Jaid stepped up as a parent and took Drew to a rehab facility so she could get clean. And even though Drew now talks about that rehab experience as lifesaving, it eventually led to her becoming legally emancipated from her mother at the age of 15.
Drew was able to create a dream career starring in a ton of hit movies. She eventually married Will Kopelman, and they had two girls together. But after five years, the couple parted ways, and all of the hurt and turmoil from her childhood came flooding back.
