On April 5, 2024, passengers onboard a United Airlines flight got a nasty surprise. A dog onboard had a bathroom accident. The pooch even pooped in the first class aisle.
Flight attendants tried desperately to clean the mess. The flight was supposed to go from Houston to Seattle. Instead, the flight was diverted to Dallas for thorough cleaning. James Hobbs, a passenger on the flight, took to Reddit to describe the smelly scene. A representative from United confirmed to People magazine that the incident took place.
The smell was so bad that the passengers were given masks and alcohol wipes to help them cope. James said the pungent order made him sick. “The mess was so bad in the first class bathroom that even after cleaning they still closed it for the rest of the flight,” he explained.
James said the dog’s waste was “a very liquid form.” It was not just a one and done situation but in several spots along the aisle. James has nothing but kind things to say about the flight attendants working to sort out this issue. “The cabin crew deserve accolades,” he stated. “They responded well despite having to hop over the mess.”

Making matters worse, while the flight was stuck on the ground, the inflight meals went bad. The flight attendants had to beg gate agents for more water and snacks. “It was a bad situation for passengers, the dog, and that poor owner," James recalled.
United’s animal policy states that only service animals are allowed to be loose in the cabin. All other cats and dogs must be in a carrier that is stored under the seat.
