Freddie Mercury possessed arguably one of the best rock voices of all time with an incredible four octave range. Combine that with his flamboyant flair and dramatic stage presence and he truly was a superstar. During his lifetime, his home in London, England, was his refuge. After he died in 1991, he left it to his former partner, Mary Austin.
She kept the home perfectly preserved for 30 years. Now she’s ready to part with it. She hopes the next owners will enjoy this part of music history in the posh Kensington neighborhood.
Freddie was born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar. His family came to England to escape the Zanzibar Revolution. He studied graphic art and design, which he used to decorate his home with exquisite details.
Freddie named his home Garden Lodge. He considered it his “country house in London.” Don’t let images of a humble home flood your mind. This is really a Neo-Georgian mansion. It is getting offers of more than $38 million.

The heart of the home is its two-story drawing room. At one time, this housed a piano that Freddie used to compose the Queen hit “Bohemian Rhapsody.” No, this is not just fantasy. It is real life.
There’s a Japanese sitting room, which leads into stunning gardens. The French doors are a lovely detail. The dining room sports citrus-toned yellow walls.
There is a dressing room, which at one time housed all of Freddie’s lavish costumes. It has floor-to-ceiling mirrors that allow one to get a complete view of an ensemble. You can just imagine Freddie checking himself out before attending a fabulous party.
This home, enclosed by stone walls, is special to Mary. “This house has been the most glorious memory box, because it has such love and warmth in every room. Ever since Freddie and I stepped through the fabled green door, it has been a place of peace, a true artist’s house, and now is the time to entrust that sense of peace to the next person,” she explained.
The Kensington neighborhood is known for its posh Victorian homes. Neighbors include Eric Clapton, Stella McCartney, Rowan Atkinson, and Dido. Nearby landmarks include the Natural History Museum, Kensington Palace, and Kensington Gardens. Fashionistas can shop on Kensington High Street for outfits to fill the dressing room.
