What does a dog do when confronted with a humpback whale? Turns out they are just as mesmerized and captivated as humans. Lauren Read captured her rescue golden retriever, Noodle, seeing his first humpback whales on Nelson Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Noodle is an almost 3-year-old good boy who Lauren rescued in January after his previous owner’s abandoned him. This was his first visit to the island, where Lauren’s family has a cabin. She was moved by this special encounter between Noodle and the whales.
"It felt like a very magical moment," she said. "I knew this was kind of a once-in-a-lifetime type of thing to happen." Noodle even jumped in the water with the whales, which made Lauren nervous.
"They were coming in closer, and I said to my boyfriend, 'You don't think he'd go in?'" she recalled. "And of course, he's like, 'No, no, no, of course not.' And then Noodle goes in almost immediately after that. So we were just a little concerned. We didn't know how far he would swim. But they were humpbacks, not orcas, so I was a little more comfortable with that."
Lauren thinks Noodle is just curious about the world around him. "I think he's just experiencing the world and trying to figure out where he stands," she explained. "He's still learning a lot. I think he was just interested in seeing what they were all about."

Lauren posted the video on Instagram and also shared it with the local news station. She is happy other people are enjoying it. "It's kind of fun to see all the people commenting and liking and sharing it," she says. "I've just been excited to share the moment with others and see the attention it's been getting."
