The 65th Grammy Awards occurred on February 5, 2023. One of the most moving moments of the awards ceremony was its "In Memoriam" segment, which honored the many artists and music professionals who died during the year. Among the honored were the late Christine McVie, Takeoff, and Loretta Lynn.
Viewers watching the telecast at home commented on how emotional and touching this section of the show was. One Twitter user, Tyler Coates, wrote, “this is the best in memoriam sequence i’ve ever seen, the entire concept and staging is very moving.”
Takeoff was remembered with a performance by his uncle Quavos. Beyond their familial bond, the pair were bandmates in Migos. Quavos sang the moving ballad “Without You.”
For country music fans, the tribute to the late Loretta Lynn was powerful. Kacey Musgraves covered Loretta’s hit song "Coal Miner's Daughter." Loretta died in her sleep on October 4, 2022, at age 90.
Fleetwood Mac fans got to witness founder Mick Fleetwood with Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt close out the segment. The trio sang “Songbird,” which was written by Christine McVie.
“This is a lovely moment to help close and send her off in a prideful way,” Mick said on the red carpet. The band may not perform again publicly. Mick went on to say: “I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris.”
