‘Jeopardy!’ Fans Are Angry After Contestant Loses For Misspelling A Word By One Letter

This may go down as one of the most upsetting moments in Jeopardy! history. Ben Chan, a contestant who was on a nine-day winning streak, brought his time on the show to an end when he misspelled a word by one letter. The "Final Jeopardy" round sent fans in an uproar, and many of them were not pleased.

Ben was tasked with naming the lovers in a Shakespeare play, both of their names coming from Latin words for "blessed." While the correct answer was Beatrice and Benedick, Ben wrote Beatrice and Benedict.

Many of the show's fans were unsatisfied with Ben's penalty.

"Since when does being off by one letter count in final jep? There's no other character he could have meant," one person tweeted.

"Awful ruling against Ben Chan on tonight's #Jeopardy," someone else shared.

Though Ben lost, he is now the first contestant to have his first nine wins be classified as a "runaway," which means no other contestants could catch up to him.

“It’s a very memorable miss, right?” he said of his loss. “So if you’re going to go out on a miss, go out on a memorable miss.”
