Jeremy Renner Says He ‘Overdid It’ In Comeback Role After Near Fatal Snowplow Accident

On New Year's Day 2023, Jeremy Renner’s life was forever changed. He was run over by a snowplow outside of his Reno, Nevada, home. He broke 38 bones and nearly died. His recovery was not easy. He underwent multiple surgeries, was confined to bed for what seemed like forever, and had to relearn to walk.

Jeremy opened up to the Los Angeles Times about his return to work. One year after his accident, he returned to the set of his hit Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown. He realized he was overdoing it on set and the production team changed the filming schedule to accommodate his needs.

Jeremy has a positive outlook on life. Even though he had health insurance, his recovery cost him “a lot of dough” as it was not cheap. "But what do I care," he stated. "I'm alive."

Jeremy is holding on to all that is good in life. “I'm walking through life with a smile on my face,” he mused. “And there's nothing that’s ever going to change that. Nothing. It's impossible for me to have a bad day.”

After the accident, Jeremy was able to solely focus on recovery, which made the process smoother. “All you gotta do is get better,” he mused. “It's a one-way street. There's no other avenues to take. It's not even [like] a piece of Ikea furniture — there are no directions. You go one direction: You get better. How easy is that? Just remember what you did yesterday, or couldn't do, and then try to do it today.”

Jeremy was originally told it would take him years to walk again. Instead, he was walking three months after the accident with the help of a cane. Jeremy believes this is because he is "a stubborn jerk."

A little over a year after the accident, he returned to filming Mayor of Kingstown. He tried to return to business as usual on set. He quickly realized that wasn’t working when he found himself falling asleep during filming.

“They go, 'And action!' And I was out,” he recalled. “We realized they worked me too hard, too many hours, too many days in a row. What I'm willing to do is everything, but what I'm able to do is a different thing.”

Thankfully, the production team was able to work with him. The schedule was changed. Jeremy also made sure to stretch and exercise on set. This gave him the needed boost to get through it all.

"They have to treat me like I'm a child actor," Jeremy explained. "The mayor of Kingstown is now like a 14-year-old."

Jeremy’s experiences have changed his outlook on life. He is writing a book about "life and death and recovery and all the things I've learned." He wants to share his hard-earned knowledge. "I've got a lot of cheat codes," he explained. One of these is: "Death is only a rebirth."
