Julia Roberts Called Off Her Wedding To Kiefer Sutherland And Left Him For His Good Friend

Julia Roberts met Kiefer Sutherland when the two costarred in 1991's Flatliners. At the time, she was engaged to Dylan McDermott, and Kiefer was married to Camelia Kath. Kiefer and Camelia finalized their divorce in 1990.

It seems that Julia and Kiefer were definitely getting cozy in the same year, as she thanked her "beautiful blue-eyed, green-eyed best friend" while accepting a Golden Globe in January 1990. Fans of Kiefer likely know that the actor has one blue eye and one green.

The pair quickly moved in together at Julia's mansion in the Hollywood Hills, but their domestic bliss wouldn't last long. In 1991, Kiefer had reportedly moved out and was living with a young adult dancer who performed under the moniker Raven.

While Kiefer's representative would later insist that nothing "romantic" happened between the two, the woman would later tell a different side of the story. Raven, or Amanda Rice, later claimed that Kiefer told her filming Pretty Woman had turned Julia into an insecure person, causing problems between them.

Kiefer and Julia apparently patched things up and decided to move forward with their wedding … until Julia called things off three days before the big day. People magazine referred to the wedding as the "wedding of the decade," noting that the venue at 20th Century Fox’s Soundstage 14 had been transformed into a "gardenlike paradise."

Kiefer moved out of Julia's house the day before the ceremony would have taken place, and on the day of the wedding Julia spent time with Jason Patric … none other than Kiefer's former friend. Jason had been an invited wedding guest, but Kiefer uninvited him in the days leading up to the big day.

The pair traveled to Dublin, Ireland, where Julia was photographed without her engagement ring. When they returned to the United States, she and Jason were officially together, though they would go on to end their own relationship in 1992.

Ultimately, it seems that Kiefer and Julia don't have any bad blood between them. In 2006, Kiefer told Rolling Stone, "I commend Julia for seeing how young and silly we were, even at the last minute, even as painful and as difficult as it was. Thank God she saw it."

As for his part, Jason addressed what happened in a 2011 interview with Vulture, noting, "They had a relationship that ended, and I was with her for a little while and it ended. They’ve both been subsequently married several times, and I think they’re fine."
