What to Know
Kai Trump, the granddaughter of President Donald Trump, is opening up about how she handles criticism against her grandfather in a new wide-ranging sit-down interview.
While speaking on influencer Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast, Trump said she is “very good at not letting that stuff bother me,” attributing her feelings to how she grew up.
“My family, they’re all very tough,” she said in comments released on YouTube Tuesday. “And to be honest with you, a lot of stuff doesn’t bother them at all, and I think because I was raised that way, it kind of rubbed off on me, and like, it doesn’t really bother me seeing stuff on social media.”
However, Trump, 18, admitted that the backlash could make her “upset, a little” at times. “Besides that, I kind of like let it roll off,” she said.
Trump, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr., went on to say that she “completely” stays out of politics, calling it “such a dangerous thing,” while noting that she has “no bad blood” with the president’s 2024 rival, former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I think if both sides met in the middle, everyone would be so much more happier,” she said. “And I think there’s radical left, there’s radical right, and there’s a lot of people that get too extreme.” Trump explained that social media platforms can create an echo chamber, which only exacerbates division in the country.
“There’s not a lot of things on social media where you’re very much in the middle, and I think that kind of makes some people crazy and some people buy into it too much,” Trump said, adding, “I’m very much in the middle.”
At another point in the interview, Trump opened up about her life with Secret Service, saying it has been “awkward” going on dates with agents sitting “two tables behind you.”
“It’s a little weird,” she said. “…I think I’ve learned, especially the past year now, that it’s been pretty much a year since he’s become president, is I’ve had to learn to kind of, ‘Yes, they’re following me,’ but also focus and pretend like they’re not there.”
She also threw cold water on whether her grandfather plans on seeking a third term.
“He’s not running a third term, no,” she said. “Sadly not though.”
When asked about Vice President JD Vance, who has emerged as a clear frontrunner among other Republican figures in early polls, she described him as “really nice” and “a really cool guy.”
Her comments come as her grandfather weighed in once again on running for another term during a wide-ranging address to House Republicans during their policy retreat on Tuesday.
“I could have the most unbelievable four years — and I guess I’m not allowed to run,” the president said. “I’m not sure.”
“Is there a little something out there that I’m not allowed to run?” he asked, while the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution prohibits him from serving more than two terms.
The president acknowledged in October that he is not allowed to run in 2028 — after previously saying he would “love to do it.”
“The best numbers for any president in many years, any president, and I would say that you read it, it’s pretty clear,” the president previously told reporters. “I’m not allowed to run again. It’s too bad.”
