‘Big Bang Theory’ Star Kate Micucci Shares Lung Cancer Battle: ‘It Was A Surprise’

Funny lady Kate Micucci is best known for her work on the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. She can now add another credit to her resume she never saw coming: lung cancer survivor. Kate took to TikTok on December 9, 2023, to share her diagnosis and subsequent surgery.

Thankfully, Kate’s cancer was caught early. Doctors were able to remove all of it. Kate was surprised by her diagnosis because she never smoked, but lung cancer can also be caused by environmental elements.

Kate was vulnerable and made her video after her surgery in the hospital. “Hey everybody, this is not a TikTok, it's a ‘Sick Tok,’” she began. “I’m in the hospital but it’s because I had lung cancer surgery yesterday. They caught it really early.”

Kate reassured her fans that she is going to be OK. “It’s really weird, because I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my life so uh, you know, it was a surprise,” Kate went on to say. “But also I guess, also, it happens and so the greatest news is they caught it early, they got it out, I’m all good.”

Excluding skin cancer, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women according to the American Cancer Society. It is responsible for 1 in 5 cancer deaths in the United States, making it the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. A typical lung cancer patient is over the age of 65 and has a history of smoking.

As more people realize the dangers of smoking and quit, new lung cancer cases are declining. Unfortunately, it is also possible to get lung cancer at a younger age and without ever smoking, like Kate. This is because of exposure to environmental elements, such as radon, pollution, and secondhand smoke.

Kate will take some time off to heal. “It’s been a little bit of a trip and [I’ll] probably be moving slow for a few weeks but then I’ll be back at it,” she promised. She is looking forward to painting again.

Kate is keeping her signature sense of humor throughout this less than ideal situation. “Why am I still talking … ‘cause I’m on drugs!” she joked as she signed off. She also shared footage of her walking around the hospital in her gown, admiring the art work.

Kate went on to share more information in the comments section. She revealed she got her diagnosis because some of her bloodwork came back irregular. She had high CRP levels. “So I went to a preventative doc who did a few scans. He scanned my heart and that’s where the spot in my lung was noticed,” she concluded.
