Katy Perry To Be Temporarily Replaced By ‘Big Time’ Guest Judge Amid ‘Idol’ Scrutiny

It seems like Katy Perry is out as a judge for American Idol … at least, for a little while.

Katy, who has been up against negative headlines for some time due to accusations that she has antagonized hopefuls on the show, will be performing at the coronation of King Charles III on May 6, 2023, and won't be able to be a judge on Idol at the same time. Co-host Lionel Richie will also be absent from Idol, as he is also performing at the king's coronation.

While speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Katy's co-judge Luke Bryan told the outlet that he's looking forward to the guest judges. As he put it, "It’s big time. It’s big time. The people that we have filling in, contestants have used their songs many, many times. A lot more than mine!"

Katy has recently hit a tough spot with Idol audiences. She first angered some after booing outfit choices made by Nutsa Buzaladze. At one point, Katy told the Idol hopeful, "Nutsa, every time you take the stage it’s like you glitter bomb the stage. Listen, one thing that I would like to see from you is not one piece of glitter the next time. I know that is going to be hard."

Katy also came under fire for shaming Sara Beth Liebe, a contestant who is also a single mom of three. After Sara commented, "If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m going to pass out," Katy replied, "Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much."
