Katy Perry Is Now Being Investigated For Filming Her Music Video On Protected Sand Dunes

Katy Perry's latest music video shows her dancing and enjoying her time on the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Formentera. What stands out about the video, though, is that Katy Perry reportedly wasn't supposed to be filming in one of the locations.

The music video for Katy Perry's song "Lifetimes" was filmed in the Parc Natural de Ses Salines, which is a national park in both Ibiza and Formentera that is known for its breathtaking scenery, according to The New York Times. Per The Guardian, parts of the video were shot on the protected dunes of S’Espalmador, and although filming is allowed there, people need to obtain permission to do so.

The dunes of S’Espalmador are ecologically sensitive and although filming is allowed there with permission, the environmental department of Spain’s Balearic islands says the production company working on Katy's video did not get permission to film there. In a news release, the regional government clarified that Katy is not under investigation for "crimes against the environment."

Instead, a preliminary investigation was initiated because Katy and the production company did not request authorization to film in the ecologically sensitive area. Officials explained that according to the region's Natural Resources Management Plan, for any photos or videos taken for "advertising or commercial exhibition" purposes, "the express authorization of the competent ministry for the environment" is required.

The music video for "Lifetimes" was produced by WeOwnTheCity. The song is a single off Katy's upcoming album, 143. So far, promoting the album has not gone particularly well for Katy. The first single off the album, "Woman's World," got a lot of negative attention, not because the music video was filmed in a protected area, but because people thought the song seemed "regressive" or like Katy is "stuck in 2016." Katy has also been criticized for continuing to work with controversial producer Dr. Luke.

Singer Kesha sued Dr. Luke in 2014, accusing him of drugging and raping her. She and Dr. Luke were then involved in a legal battle for nearly a decade, with Dr. Luke claiming that "nothing happened."

Katy's latest album is set to come out on September 20, 2024, about four years after her sixth studio album was released.
