The human body is an amazing creation, which is especially evident when one looks at childbirth. This doesn’t mean giving birth is easy on it because the stress, hormone fluctuations, and other changes can be both emotionally and physically difficult to endure. Many find the transition into parenthood bumpy. Kelly Ripa recalled a worrisome interaction she had with the wardrobe department after giving birth to her first child on her podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa.
Kelly played Hayley Vaughan on the popular soap opera All My Children for 12 years. She returned to work just nine days after giving birth to her son Michael in 1997. The wardrobe department had the audacity to comment on her size.
Kelly and guest Hilarie Burton were discussing postpartum depression when the story came up. “The wardrobe people were like, 'We thought you’d be smaller by now,'” Kelly recalled. “I was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to be smaller anytime soon. I don’t know much but here’s what I do know. This looks like it’s going to be here for a while. I’m not in any rush.'”
Kelly publicly kept a stiff upper lip, but was struggling internally. “I didn’t recognize my body,” she explained. “I was on a soap and I had to go back to work nine days after, nine days! It was brutal.”

Kelly shares three children with husband Mark Consuelos. She was so thankful her in-laws moved in with them when she had Michael, but she still struggled. “I think all women who have given birth will tell you that they feel they are on an island. I don’t care what the support system is,” she mused.
