Louis Hicks had been living a life of solitude for many years. The 92-year-old was a decorated World War II veteran, and even though he tried to keep up his home on the exterior, like making sure there were always flowers planted and the paint was touched up, things weren’t so pretty on the inside.
His time in the war had deeply changed Louis and when he got back and tried to live a normal life, he found it difficult to be around people. Even though he lived in a good neighborhood in Austin, Texas, Louis rarely spoke to his neighbors or even his mail carrier as he much preferred to just keep to himself.
Louis wasn’t always on his own as at one point he had a wife and two kids, but when he returned from the war, everything seemed different to him. He refused psychological help, which ultimately caused him to withdraw from both his family and society.
Living on his own for so many years allowed Louis to develop some bad habits. In many aspects, he lived in a manner that most wouldn’t consider safe or proper.
According to KVUE, Louis had gotten into the habit of heating his home by turning on his gas-powered stove and oven and using a portable fan to blow the hot air to the parts of his home where he was spending time.

The news outlet reports that a police officer stopped by Louis' home to complete a police report about some stolen tools when the officer noticed how he was keeping his house warm. The officer felt this was unsafe, so she notified some of her coworkers who participated in a local charity that helped donate air conditioners and heaters to Texan residents in need.
