Maine Mass Shooting Suspect Had A Military Background And Mental Health Issues

On Wednesday October 25, 2023, another mass shooting occurred in the United States. This time in two locations in Lewiston, Maine, at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley, and Schemengees Bar and Grille. Eighteen people were killed and 13 were injured. The suspect, Robert Card, 40, is still at large.

The first 911 call reporting the incident at the bowling alley came in at 6:56 p.m. Twelve minutes later, a second call reported a shooting at the bar. The locations are four miles apart.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills held a press conference to address the mass shooting on Thursday morning. She warned that Card should be considered "armed and extremely dangerous." The search for him continues and local schools have decided to remain closed today because of it.

According to Army Spokesman Bryce Dubee, Card is a petroleum supply specialist in the US Army Reserve. The Associated Press reported that over the summer Card was committed to a mental health facility for two weeks. He had reportedly threatened to shoot up the military base in Saco, Maine.

Card allegedly killed seven people at the bowling alley. Eight were killed at the bar, including one outside the building. Three people later died in the hospital. Eight patients remain in medical care with five stable and three in critical condition. Only eight of those who died have been identified, so Card’s arrest warrant has been issued for those deaths. Once the other 10 victims have been identified, more charges will be filed.
