Martha Stewart Felt ‘Betrayed’ After Her Husband Cheated ‘Right On Our Property’

Martha Stewart admittedly cheated on ex-husband Andrew Stewart during their marriage, which lasted from 1961 to 1990. She described an affair that she had as a “very brief affair.” “It was nothing,” she said. “I would never have broken up a marriage for it.” Meanwhile, Andrew also cheated on Martha while they were married. In a new documentary, Martha details how her husband “betrayed” her by having an affair “right on our property.”

A new Netflix documentary about Martha Stewart, titled Martha, delves into different aspects of her life, including her childhood, her career, and her marriage.

In the documentary, Martha, 83, shared a piece of advice with younger women: “Young women listen to my advice. If you’re married and your husband starts to cheat on you — he’s the piece of s—, and look at him as a piece of s— and get out of it. Get out of that marriage.”

In spite of this assertion, Martha maintains that she was not the one who wanted a divorce from her ex-husband. Although Martha had “a very brief affair,” she didn’t think her husband knew about it, per the New York Post.

Director R.J. Cutler told her that he did. “He says he didn’t stray from the marriage until you told him you had already strayed,” the director told Martha. Martha replied with, “Oh, that’s not true. I don’t think.”

In the documentary, Martha said that although she wasn’t sure how many times her husband had cheated on her, she thinks he had affairs with “quite a few” different women. One of those women was an employee of Martha’s who was looking for a place to stay. Martha told the employee that she could stay in the barn apartment on their Turkey Hill Road property in Westport, Connecticut.

Martha alleges that her husband had an affair with her employee while she was away. “When I was traveling, Andy started up with her,” Martha alleged. “It was like I put out a snack for Andy.” When Martha learned of the affair, she kicked her employee out and confronted her. “You know, ‘What the hell are you doing?’” Martha said. “Andy betrayed me, right on our property. Not nice.”

Though Martha shared some details about her husband’s alleged affairs, she said it was difficult for her to talk about. To provide more insight, she shared some old letters with the film’s director.

“Again, I feel betrayed and all alone,” she wrote in one letter, per Entertainment Weekly. “When you tell me that this is no longer your home, after all we did here together, why shouldn’t I say I’m going to burn it down? I am to go to San Francisco to talk about weddings and my wonderful life. I hope you’re enjoying your freedom, and I hope my plane crashes.”

In another letter, Martha wrote of being in a “fragile, breakable state.” “I cannot sleep. I cannot eat. My skin is worried and many lines that were not there are now there,” she wrote, per the New York Post. “I am agonizingly jealous of your other women. I can’t bear that you use what we did together on others.”

Martha admits that she probably treated her husband poorly, too. “He was throwing me away. I was 40 years old. I was gorgeous,” she said. “You know, I was a desirous woman. But he was treating me like a castaway. He treated me really badly. And in return, I guess I treated him badly.”

Though Martha and her ex share daughter Alexis Stewart, Martha told People that she hasn’t spoken to her ex-husband in more than 20 years.
