Back in November 2017, Matt Lauer, 65, was fired from his longtime job as Today show coanchor. The reason behind the studio letting him go is due to complaints of “inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.”
One incident involved former NBC employee Brooke Nevils. She alleges that Lauer raped her in her hotel room at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Lauer claims that the encounter was consensual. He is also rumored to have had a fling with another former NBC star, but he has denied any wrongdoing.
Lauer has been avoiding the media since he was ousted from NBC News, but friends of his have stated to Page Six that he has been pondering a return to the media world.
One source said, “He thinks that he should be able to have a comeback.” Even though Lauer does think he should be able to have a comeback, he fully understands that there might not be a chance of that happening.
Sources have said that Lauer has been focused on spending time with his children and his girlfriend, Shamin Abas, 53, who is a public relations and marketing guru. They have recently been spotted together in NYC.
Since his ouster, Lauer has lost contact with most of his former powerful media friends and rarely speaks to anyone on Today. An insider said, “He’s still pretty upset about how he was ousted at NBC and upset at all the people he thought were his friends who turned their backs on him. He knows he made mistakes, and he is a lot more humble.”
Friends say that Lauer has put all of his spare time into his children. He shares three children with his former wife, Annette Roque: Jack, 21; Romy, 19; and Thijs, 16. The couple got divorced back in September 2019.

Once Lauer got fired from NBC, he slowly started to leave his lavish lifestyle. He sold his Manhattan apartment, stopped taking helicopter rides from the Hamptons to the city, and finally found someone to buy his $43.99 million Sag Harbor estate. He has since settled into a quiet life in Long Island.
