Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, at the height of his acting career. He was just 29 years old. Since then, he has worked tirelessly to advocate for those living with the progressive brain disorder, establishing the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000.
On Thursday, November 9, 2023 Michael appeared on CBS Mornings and discussed how his diagnosis shaped his life. He was open about struggles with his mental health while living with the disease. He tries his best to remain positive, but it can be challenging at times.
Nate Burleson asked Michael if he ever experienced depression. Michael replied: "Yesterday at 3:57 in the afternoon." He has always been open about his experiences.
"Positivity is really sincere and I really feel it, and it's genuine, but it's hard fought, and it's hard won,” Michael went on to say. Michael copes by giving himself a break and “credit for getting through life on life's terms.” He tries to look for the good. “In order to do that, we have to stop and say, 'it's not that bad,'" he stated.

Michael uses his celebrity to shine a light on the disease through his foundation. He understood other Parkinson’s patients did not have the power to do so. "They didn't have money, they didn't have a voice, and I thought, I could step in for these people and raise some hell," he explained.
He is happy to raise awareness about the disease. "It's not a cure. But it's a big spotlight on where we need to go, and what we need to focus on so we know we're on the right path, and we're very proud,” he stated.
He is thankful for his wife Tracy Pollan for standing by his side through sickness and health. "She was able to get me through it, and go through it with me. And she has for 35 years,” he gushed.
