Morgan Freeman Says ‘Convicted Felon’ Donald Trump Should Not Be President

Morgan Freeman clearly can’t believe that a convicted felon can become president of the United States, and yet, here we are, with Donald Trump serving as president. The 88-year-old actor didn’t hold back from sharing how he feels about the state of the country during a recent appearance on The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell on MS NOW. Hint: he’s not a fan of the current president.

Freeman made a comment about how the world has changed, so O’Donnell asked him to elaborate. “How would you describe where we are now?” O’Donnell asked.

Freeman’s reaction to this question made it clear that he did not have good things to say.

He hesitated and then eventually asked, “Can I use any profanity?” O’Donnell assured him that he could say whatever he wanted to say. Perhaps unsurprisingly, when Freeman asked this, it’s because he wanted to complain about Trump. “Well, we have somebody sitting in the White House who’s leading us down a s—hole,” Freeman explained. “I can’t personally understand how a convicted felon, convicted, 34 felon — felonious, is that the word? — counts of wrongdoing, gets to be president?”

Clearly perplexed by this, Freeman added, “How do you do that?” Freeman went on to say that the ways in which people have defended Trump and made excuses for him don’t make sense to him either. “When say, ‘Well, he was…,’ I don’t care,” Freeman asserted. “That ruling went down before he stepped into the Oval Office. So it just doesn’t make sense to me.”

“He’s not wrong,” someone wrote on social media.

Given how divided things are in the U.S., it’s not surprising that reactions to Freeman’s comments were mixed. But there were definitely other people who couldn’t wrap their head around why people support (and voted for) Trump. “It is just mind boggling how anyone could vote for a felon!!!” one Redditor agreed. “Is this the best the GOP has to offer?? Pathetic.”

Someone else wrote, “Doesn’t make any sense to me either, Morgan. Not one bit.” Plenty of others remain mystified by this too, but others noted that they nearly forgot about Trump’s felony convictions because of all of the other things that he’s done that somehow seem even worse.

“What’s crazy is that I can think of like 10 other things off the top of my head about Donald Trump that are more disqualifying than the felony convictions,” someone wrote.

Because of Freeman’s comments, O’Donnell asked him if he feels like we’re moving backwards rather than making progress. Freeman said that things currently feel “very different.” He explained, “I’m constantly reminded of Germany in 1935. What was happening there, the brownshirts, those people that are marching through, particularly Berlin, and rounding up people, putting them in boxcars and sending them off. Now, this administration wants to build large detention centers, and for what?”
