Paul Walter Hauser says that his weight has impacted his acting career. In an interview with People, the 37-year-old actor opened up about the roles he's landed due to his weight. “I lost 40 pounds to do the role in Black Bird,” he said of his Emmy-winning role as Larry Hall in the 2022 miniseries.
“I put some of that weight back on, and now I'm bringing it back down.” He added, “trying to get back down to 246 [lbs.]” is a realistic goal. That's kind of a nice fighting weight for me, for my size and the things I get cast in."
He says that he's going to be working toward meeting his weight goal "slowly but surely," but he's aware of the kind of roles his weight has landed him in. “I've played every type of chubby, misguided person. I don't need to play 900 more.”
“Chris Farley will be my last very heavy-set role in which I am on paper and visually overweight," Paul said, referring to his upcoming role as the late comedian in a biopic. "I have every intention to get the weight down, like Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen and all these other guys who have done it. I'm done with that version of that character, and I look forward to being healthy.”

Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle is “incredibly important to me,” Paul noted. "I got sober October 26th of 2021, so I’ve got over two-and-a-half years of sobriety.” He intends to be "around for a long time for my kids and my wife,” he added, so this journey is one that he's taking seriously. “[Let’s] see if I can compete with the Ben Fosters and the Ryan Goslings!”
