On Wednesday, almost a week after authorities said the Titan submersible had imploded, the US Coast Guard released a statement saying that human remains were likely within the wreckage of the Titan.
The debris and evidence was recovered from the seafloor and was received by the US Coast Guard at a Canadian pier.
The statement said the evidence will be transported to a port in the US for further analysis and testing.
"United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident," the statement noted.
Analysis and testing of this evidence is one part of the ongoing investigation. The Marine Board of Investigation is looking into what caused the submersible to implode, and will also interview witnesses.
The timeline for the investigation is unclear.

"The evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy. There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the TITAN and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again,” MBI Chair Captain Jason Neubauer noted in the statement.
