Man Starts Marathon & Suffers Massive Heart Attack, Fellow Runners Jump In To Rescue Him

Marathons are known for being grueling challenges and inspiring remarkable displays of endurance. But for Greg Woodman a half marathon in Pennsylvania became the stage for an entirely different kind of feat — one of heroism and life-saving actions.

As he participated in the race, fate took an unexpected turn, leading to a massive heart attack that could have been fatal. Thankfully, among the runners that day were some health care professionals, including two dedicated nurses who played a pivotal role in his miraculous survival.

Greg Woodman, 65, was running this half marathon in Pennsylvania to train for the Boston marathon. Once the half marathon started, Greg only ran for a few minutes before he suffered from a massive heart attack. The shock and panic that must have accompanied his sudden medical emergency could have led to a tragic outcome.

Fortunately, luck was on Greg’s side that day, as the race had attracted health care professionals with the expertise necessary to spring into action, including several nurses. Each of the nurses took turns performing CPR on Greg attempting to save his life. Inside Edition interviewed the nurses who were by Greg’s side and the dedication you hear in their voices is heartwarming.

One nurse said, “I went over, and I took over for him and just started hands-on only CPR which anybody can do.” Another nurse stated, “I was next in line for compressions, I knew that we needed to continue that until the EMS crew could get there”. A third nurse who worked on Greg said, “I started compressions right there, it felt like I broke every rib in his chest honestly and it made me sick to stomach but I was like I have to do what I have to do.”

In the six agonizing minutes that passed before the ambulance reached the scene, these dedicated nurses continued their relentless efforts. Greg’s heart, which had momentarily stopped, was restarted on the way to the medical center. Greg said, “If I were running alone, I wouldn’t be here today.”
