Grief is not linear, or for the faint of heart. Lisa Marie Presely’s family and friends are dealing with this firsthand. The singer-songwriter and mother of four died unexpectedly on January 12, 2023.
On January 22, 2023, a public memorial service was held at Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee. Friends, family, and fans attended to honor, remember, and say goodbye to Lisa Marie. Among the speakers at the event was Sarah Ferguson, who shared a poignant quote from her late mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth.
Sarah and Lisa Marie shared a deep friendship. “I stand here with great honor because we called each other 'sissy.’ Sissy, this is for you with affection,” Sarah began.
“My late mother-in-law used to say that nothing can be said [that] can begin to take away the anguish and the pain of these moments, because grief is the price we pay for love. And how right she was,” Sarah recalled.
Sarah went on to acknowledge Priscilla and Lisa Marie’s close bond. She also acknowledged the fact that Lisa Marie lost her son, Benjamin, to suicide in 2020.
“Mothers losing children — there are no words for it. So today we talk about action. Action is the way we can go forward, we can light the flame. So for Riley, for Harper and Finley and the entire family, we march forward in support of you. All of us are with you. If you just put out your hand we will be there. I will definitely be there,” Sarah vowed.
