Part of the universal human condition is when we fall short. It is also sometimes literally tripping and falling. Being a human being can be embarrassing and painful at times. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell knows this firsthand.
On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, Senator McConnell tripped and fell at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, DC. He sustained unknown injuries as a result and was transported to a local hospital, where he was admitted and is receiving treatment. A spokesperson for the senator confirmed this news.
“This evening, Leader McConnell tripped at a local hotel during a private dinner. He has been admitted to the hospital where he is receiving treatment,” stated spokesperson David Popp. NBC News reported another spokesperson confirmed the location of the fall, naming the hotel.
A spokesman for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, Vito Maggiolo, was bound by privacy laws. He could disclose that at 9:17 p.m. on Wednesday an “adult male” was transported to a local hospital. He could not say who the person was, reveal what hospital the person was taken to, or comment on his injuries.
Senator McConnell began serving in the Senate in 1984. The 2020 election gave him his seventh term in office. He held the title of majority leader from 2015 to early 2021, losing it when the Democrats took back the majority. This is not the first time he has fallen and injured himself. In 2019, he tripped and fell at his Kentucky home, fracturing his shoulder, requiring surgery to repair it.
