What to Know
People are threatening to boycott Smoothie King after a man who supports President Donald Trump was reportedly denied service at one of the smoothie chain’s locations. A viral video that showed a couple attempting to order smoothies at a Smoothie King in Ann Arbor, Michigan sparked the controversy. In the video, a woman claimed that she and her husband were denied service because of the husband’s Trump hoodie.
The video, which was initially shared on TikTok but later deleted, started circulating on X. In it, the woman said, “We’re at Smoothie King and they’re discriminating and saying we cannot get service.”
The couple appeared to argue with two employees about this.
Speaking to the employees directly, the woman said, “We were just wanting a smoothie, and you literally looked at us and I asked you if everything was OK, and you said we don’t feel comfortable serving you because of my husband’s hoodie. That is discrimination.”
An employee seemingly urged the couple to leave in response, telling them to “have a great day.” The couple told them that what they were doing was “illegal” and said “you don’t own Smoothie King.” After going back and forth for some time, the woman turned to face the camera again and said, “So, literally, Jake’s wearing his hoodie and they would not serve us because Jake’s wearing a Trump hoodie.”
In the clip, it sounded like an employee told the woman that the situation was embarrassing for her. In response, the woman said, “What’s embarrassing is that we’re American citizens and I wanted to get a smoothie.”

After the clip went viral, some conservatives said they would no longer be going to Smoothie King.
“I’ve stopped going,” one person wrote on X. “Personal politics should never interfere with serving customers.” Another person questioned, “In America we are discriminated against because we support our elected President?” Someone else said, “We will find another place to spend money. A company that supports right wingers.”
After the incident went viral on social media, Smoothie King released a couple of statement and also confirmed that the two employees have been let go. “As a brand, Smoothie King is committed to ensuring our stores are a place free of discrimination of any kind, where every guest and team member is treated with care and respect,” the company wrote. Smoothie King also stated that the franchise owner “has taken immediate action and the two employees involved are no longer with the business.”

The company added, “Both the franchise owner and Smoothie King corporate have reached out to the guest several times to apologize and will continue to follow up.”
The actions Smoothie King took were also controversial though, as people accused the company of “bowing down” to MAGA and not siding with its employees.
