Motherhood is not easy. Every mom goes through her own unique journey. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner began in her 20s, which is on the younger side. She had doubts when she found out she was pregnant with her daughter Willa at age 24.
Sophie opened up about this in an interview with British Vogue. It was published on May 15, 2024. Sophie will grace the June print cover.
Sophie was immediately excited about becoming a mom. “Maybe because I was so young, I sat on it for a week,” she explained. “Thankfully there were therapists there to help me talk things through.”
Sophie found out she was pregnant while on a retreat in Bali. She was married to Joe Jonas at the time. When she got home, she opened up to him.

“I remember throwing the pregnancy test at him, saying, ‘What do you think we should do? Do you think we should have it?’” she explained. “When you’re in your early 20s, life is so frivolous.”
Sophie wasn’t sure she “wanted to be a mother” at first. When she was talking with Joe “something changed” and she made up her mind. “I just knew I had to have her,” she explained.
Willa was born in July 2020. Two years later, her sister Delphine came into the world. “Because my ex and I travel so much, I wanted Willa to have a sibling,” Sophie stated. “I wanted them to have each other. They’re so much fun, total girlie girls and absolute rays of sunshine in my life.”
In September 2023, Joe filed for divorce. It’s been messy. The exes fought over custody of the girls. Sophie wanted them in England and Joe wanted them in New York. In October 2023, a temporary custody agreement was reached that has the girls splitting time between the two locations. The divorce has yet to be finalized.
The custody battle and divorce took its toll on Sophie. “There were some days that I didn’t know if I was going to make it,” she recalled. “I would call my lawyer saying, ‘I can’t do this. I just can’t.’ I was just never strong enough to stand up for myself. And then, finally, after two weeks of me being in a rut, she reminded me that it was my children I was fighting for.”
This was a turning point for Sophie. “Once anyone says to me, ‘Do it for your kids,’ I’m doing it. I wouldn’t do it for myself, but I’ll find the strength for them,” she concluded.
