Steve Harvey Says Will Smith Slapped Chris Rock Onstage Because He Knew He Couldn’t React

Steve Harvey has words for Will Smith. While a lot of people are torn on whether or not Will was justified in slapping Chris Rock during his set at the Oscars, Steve wants to be clear: He was not here for it.

He spoke directly to the point some people are making in defending Will — that he was just defending his wife. "I understand defending the honor of your wife, I’m that dude," Steve said during a recent discussion with his Steve Harvey Morning Show panel.

"He didn’t do that. That joke was not worthy of the reaction."

Steve continued, “If he was gonna have a reaction, I think that Will should have done the man thing, which is step to him afterwards in that press room. And if he wanted to slap Chris then, he could have slapped Chris in the press room and seen how it went.”

"Let me tell you something, that's a Hollywood move," he said. "To go up there on national TV, slap another Black man, turn around your back and walk off 'cause you know he can't do nothin."

Steve defiantly added that he believes Will has "been in Hollywood" long enough that he understands exactly that. "You know in real life that ain't the way this gonna go," he added, pressing the point that Chris Rock would've fought back if it hadn't been in that exact moment. "And Rock is a Jersey boy," he said.
