Alan Hamel believes that there is an afterlife because of strange things that have happened in the home he shared with his late wife Suzanne Somers. Suzanne died of breast cancer in October 2023. She died “peacefully at home” just before what would've been her 77th birthday. Alan can still feel her presence in their home in Palm Springs, California, which has made the grieving process a bit easier for the 87-year-old. In a recent interview, he told Page Six that three unusual things happened on the same day.
"A hummingbird flew into our house and made the rounds in the kitchen, and the living room and the dining room," he explained to Page Six. Then, the hummingbird "hovered" in front of a framed photo of Suzanne and Alan. The bird also "landed on top and stayed there."
He witnessed another strange thing after that. Not only did the fireplace start on its own, according to him, but music by Suzanne's favorite composer also started playing.
Her favorite composer was not popular or well-known, making him believe that it could not possibly be a coincidence.

"No one’s ever heard of this guy,” he told Page Six, referring to the composer whose music randomly started playing in his home.
These strange experiences, along with feeling Suzanne's presence, have helped Alan believe there is an afterlife. "I’m a believer now that there is an afterlife. I’m convinced of it," he told Page Six. "We still have our soul. I think our soul is energy. The soul must go somewhere and do something."
Believing that there is an afterlife also makes dealing with his grief easier, as if there really is an afterlife, he explained to Page Six, "we'll be reunited."
Alan was married to Suzanne for nearly 50 years, and they were together for 55 years. They were inseparable.
"The past 42 years, we have not spent even one hour apart. And one of our sons refers to our relationship as 'functionally codependent,' which it probably is," Alan previously told People.
Alan said he still feels his partner's presence around him. When he's with family, if he needs to step away for a moment, he goes to the bedroom and can "feel her presence."
He also feels that she is around when he's trying to sleep.
Prior to Suzanne's death, Suzanne and Alan had talked about death and the possibility of an afterlife. Because Alan was older, he thought he would be the first one to die.
After Suzanne's death, he told Today that he "was grateful that [he] was with her when she left us."
"It was very peaceful and it was beautiful. And she was beautiful," he told Today.
"She was an amazing, amazing woman," he continued. "Aside from all her accomplishments, she was an amazing wife and an amazing mother, as well. She’s the one who pulled our family together."
