Ted Danson & Wife Mary Steenburgen Have Their Version Of ‘Date Nights’ At 4:30 AM

Even after nearly 30 years of marriage, date nights are still important to Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen. However, their date nights look a bit different now as they get older. During an interview with People, Ted, 76, joked that “date nights are kind of, at my age, date early bird specials.”

The Cheers actor told the publication that he and Mary, 71, now like to spend time together early in the morning. “The most fun is the early mornings, 4:30 in the morning, coffee in bed, playing Wordle, Connections, and Spelling Bee, talking and laughing and sharing,” Ted told People, referring to the popular New York Times word games. “To both of us, it’s like heaven on Earth.”

Ted and Mary have been married since October 1995. In 2018, after they had been married for 22 years and together for 25, Mary told People that Ted still compliments her every day.

“He does tell me every single day of my life I’m beautiful, and I do know a lot of women live without that,” she said. “And it does matter, someone just telling you that.”

In 2021, the couple spoke about how they truly believe they were meant to be together. Mary told People that it might sound “corny,” but she “would sign up for a 100 more lifetimes” with Ted.

“There’s no hollow in my heart where I don’t love him, or where I doubt this love,” she said at the time. “There’s no secret place where I say we weren’t a thousand percent supposed to spend our life together.”

Though Ted and Mary met each other a bit later in life (they were in their 40s), Ted believes they met at the right time. He previously told People that he “wants as long as possible in my life with Mary.” However, during the more recent interview, he admitted that their relationship probably wouldn’t have worked out if they had met earlier.

“I was not really fully emotionally baked until shortly before I met Mary,” he confessed. Ted added that right before he met Mary, he started making an effort to “become a more emotionally mature, honest human being.” For this reason, he’s glad they met exactly when they did. “Thank God we didn’t meet earlier,” he said.
